Last week I was speaking with an experienced recruiter who was feeling rather deflated. He explained that over the last 6 months he’d had several candidates take roles only to leave after a few months. He spoke about one candidate in particular for whom he had negotiated hard for the right package and benefits to get the best results for all parties.
The employer was delighted to fill such a high-level role and the candidate was excited, until 3 months into the role when the candidate left.
As an ex-recruiter, I felt his pain. He talked about all the steps in place to make sure the candidate was happy, kept in touch and answered all their questions. Even arranged an introduction day before the start date. So, what went wrong?
The candidate had the right skills and experience, the company offered the right package so what was missing?
The role was working for a manufacturing organisation and whilst it seemed to offer all the candidate asked for, the candidate became unhappy. When questioned the candidate was honest, they felt that the role wasn’t giving them a sense of purpose, they were just going to work, doing their job and going through the motions.
It’s true to say that I don’t know the candidate, but from all, I heard and understood from the recruiter, and I did ask lots of questions, I would say that this candidate wanted a role that they believed in, they needed to see their role as important and significant. Yes, I did take the opportunity to talk about the value of Motivational Mapping in recruitment, it could have saved so much time and expense for all parties. For the candidate to easily see what needed to be in place for them to thrive; for the recruiter to know for sure they had the right candidate to fit the environment and for the employer to avoid unnecessary costs and wasted training.
